26 June, 12 a.m.

I can’t sleep a wink. The mere thought of conceding defeat to such a vicious gang is poisoning my mind. Do we have a choice? I have a plan, though its result cannot be predicted beforehand. Yet we are left with no other option. For this, we need the active help of Julius Frankenstein. If this works out, it will benefit one and all and I’ll come out as a champion! In the past, I have managed to cross many unthinkable hurdles, but this will be my real acid test.

28 June

First, let me recount in detail the story of Rudel’s resurrection.

Following our instructions, Rudel’s men brought his body to the Frankenstein Schloss the day before yesterday. Going by his looks, one couldn’t guess his violent and ruthless nature. He was average to look at, not more than forty years of age. I asked the men to place Rudel’s body on the steel table in the laboratory. I then said, ‘You all now return the day after tomorrow, early in the morning. I’ve full faith that Rudel will have come back to life by then. But if you surround us with guns every minute, there’s no way we can function properly. You have to trust us. If, when you return the day after tomorrow morning, you still find Rudel lifeless, you can take any action you deem fit. Since one dead body has come back to life I see no reason why it won’t work this time.’

Fortunately, Rudel’s followers believed us and left.

Here I must mention that I regret I’m not carrying my lethal weapon Annihilin with me as I had no idea that I’d be facing such danger. With Annihilin, it would have been so easy to wipe out the entire gang in an instant.

After Rudel’s men left, I turned to Julius Frankenstein. ‘Do you have any surgeon here who can operate on the brain? He should be very competent.’

Julius Frankenstein said, ‘Yes, indeed. Heinrich Kümmel is Germany’s most noted neurosurgeon. I know him quite well.’

I then revealed why I posed this question.

‘I want to revive Rudel adopting the same method as used by Victor Frankenstein to reincarnate dead bodies. Therefore, in this case I require a brain to be inserted in place of Rudel’s brain. I need to discuss a few things with you but strictly in confidence.’

I didn’t want to disclose this to Crole and Saunders right then and hence I took Julius Frankenstein to the next room to discuss my plans. Julius promised all his help. I have to depend on Julius Frankenstein as we are strangers in this town. Also, as an inheritor of a great heritage, he can exercise his influence.

We had to give our dinner a miss tonight. Both Saunders and Crole are as excited as little boys. They said, ‘Why aren’t you revealing your scheme to us?’

I responded, ‘I myself don’t know what result my tests will reveal. To an extent, it’s a shot in the dark. But both of you will bear witness to whatever happens the day after tomorrow.
